Laboratory Waste Updates

Subpart K – UT Dallas has opted into a new set of federal regulations from the Environmental Protection Agency, 40 CFR 262.200-216. These regulations, referred to as “Subpart K,” change a few things regarding how waste generated in academic laboratories is handled. Some of the key points are outlined below.

  • Chemical waste generated in the laboratory should now be referred to as “Laboratory Waste,” rather than “Hazardous Waste.”
  • Lab personnel are not required to determine if their waste is hazardous or non-hazardous. All chemical waste should be managed as if it were hazardous, unless explicitly instructed otherwise by Office of Research Compliance Laboratory Safety personnel.
  • Lab members must still identify contents of waste containers, but trained professionals will determine if the laboratory waste is hazardous per federal and state regulations.

New Chemical Waste Training – This training will be made available through BioRAFT. All members of labs generating chemical waste will be required to take this training. You will receive a notification when the training become available and is assigned to you. This training addresses all the changes in the UT Dallas Hazardous Waste Program.

 

Waste Storage Area Signs – The previously dark blue, Satellite Accumulation Area signs, will be replaced with green Laboratory Waste Storage Area signs. In areas that permit, your lab will receive a sign with a pocket containing waste labels, waste tags, and additional information. Otherwise, your lab will receive an 8 ½” x 11” sign, along with a matching folder to store labels, tags, and other pertinent information. Hazardous Waste personnel and Lab Safety Specialists will be delivering new waste storage area signs to your labs in the coming weeks.

Waste Request Procedures – Labeling procedures and waste pickup request forms are changing. Please thoroughly read the information below pertaining to the updates to the laboratory waste pickup request system

  • Waste Labels – Your lab will receive new waste identification labels. The labels are identified as “Laboratory Waste,” rather than “Hazardous Waste”, to follow Subpart K requirements. As before, these labels should be completed as soon as any waste is added to the container.

  • Waste Tags – Your lab will receive a set of neon green waste tags, with attached wire. All chemical hazardous waste containers are required to have this tag when ready for pickup. These tags provide the unique container number required for the Laboratory Waste Pickup Request forms. Complete the “LABORATORY WASTE” side and attach the tag to the container to signify that the waste is ready for pickup. You must still submit an online laboratory pickup request. The red and white “Laboratory Waste” labels are still required on the container as soon as waste is added.

  • Waste Request Emails – You are no longer required to print the confirmation email and attach it to the container; the waste tag is replacing this requirement. You will still receive an email when submitting a request. However, this is only to provide instructions for waste storage and pickups, and to serve as a confirmation for the request.
  • Request Forms – There are now THREE separate forms for laboratory waste-related requests. A fourth form is available for non-laboratory uses; however, this is reserved for Facilities, offices, IT, athletics, and similar.

DO NOT complete a form for the removal of radioactive materials or DEA controlled substances from your lab. For disposal of these items, please contact waste@utdallas.edu or your lab’s safety specialist.

Please note that waste pickups and deliveries typically occur on Wednesdays and Fridays. If you need more immediate assistance, please complete the form and email waste@utdallas.edu.

  1. Laboratory Waste Pickup Request – You are now able to submit requests for multiple waste containers at once. This form is to request the pickup of laboratory waste AND to request the delivery of empty containers. The exception to this is for unwanted chemicals, stored in their original container. For these items, please see the “Laboratory Chemical Clean Out Request.”
  2. Laboratory Chemical Cleanout Request – Use this form to request the removal of unwanted, expired or surplus chemicals from your lab. This form will allow a quick entry list of up to 20 containers. You do not need to remove UT Dallas bar codes, or affix waste tags to these containers. Chemicals suitable for pickup as a Laboratory Chemical Cleanout must be uncontaminated, unmixed, and in the original container. If this is not the case, please complete the “Laboratory Waste Pickup Request” Form.
  3. Replacement Waste Container and Waste Supply Request – If you need waste containers or other waste supplies, but do not need to submit a waste pickup request, you can use this quick form.
