The Texas Section of AAPT/Zone 13 of SPS Workshops are set for the Joint Fall 2017 Meeting at The University of Texas at Dallas in Richardson, Texas on October 20th and 21th.

Abstract Submission

Abstracts are to be submitted through the APS website | Deadline: Wednesday, September 27, 2017

Many teaching workshops are available. Participants must register online at or by mail with this form.

Invited Presentations

  • Invited and plenary speakers must submit their abstracts to the "Invited Speaker" submission site: abstracts.aps.org/invited

Contributed Presentations

  • Oral contributed and poster abstracts must submit their abstracts to the "General" submission site: abstracts.aps.org

Student Travel Awards

Please complete steps 1-3 below by the Abstract Deadline on September 27, 2017 to be eligible for a Student Travel Award. 
  1. Complete the application form located here.
  2. Submit an APS abstract with the student as the first author and presenter. The abstract deadline is September 27, 2017.
  3. Have your research supervisor or department chair complete the form supporting the travel award.

Additionally, you will also need to take following steps before the meeting.

  1. Pre-register for the meeting by September 27, 2017.
  2. Join the Texas Section of the American Physical Society.  Membership is free for the first year for students.  The application is available online. and you just need to make sure and add the Texas Section.
Travel awards will be $50-200 for as many students as possible, but the funds are limited. Students are expected to attend the major events of the meeting including the banquet. Recipients will be notified by e-mail by September 28, 2017.  Once attendance at the meeting is confirmed a check will be issued to reimburse the applicant. 

Student Presentation Awards

The Texas Section of the American Physical Society recognizes outstanding student presentations with cash prizes. Graduate students and undergraduate students are judged in separate categories. Both oral and poster presentations are eligible to win.

Student Presentation Award Judges

Faculty and postdocs are encouraged to volunteer as judges for the Student Presentation Awards. Each talk or poster that is submitted by a student needs to be judged by 2 - 3 different judges, a huge effort that cannot be accomplished without your help! If you are willing to volunteer as a judge, please fill out this form.

Joint Fall 2017 Meeting | sponsorship + exhibitors

Guidelines for Poster Presenters

  • Posters should be designed to fit a 30” x 40” board and placed on an easel. Your poster should consist of a material that can be mounted easily with push pins or Binder clips. Push pins/clips, boards, and easels will be provided at the meeting for displaying.
  • Posters will be mounted on the bulletin boards set up in {Location TBD}, using the schedule and numbering provided upon check-in.
  • The actual poster session(s) schedule and time(s) are still pending.
  • During the scheduled Poster Sessions, presenters are asked to be available at their poster for discussion.

Guidelines for Speakers

  • Locate your talk in the program booklet or the online program on the website and identify your session location and talk time.
  • Try to arrive at your session 10 minutes early to setup, introduce yourself to the Session Chair, and upload your presentation onto the laptop provided in the meeting room.
  • If your presentation contains animations, movie or videos, make sure that those are either embedded or those files are uploaded separately
  • Please stop when signaled by the Chair of the Session to do so.

Guidelines for Session Chairs

  • Arrive at least 10 minutes early to the start of the session, locate speakers and urge them to upload the presentations to the laptop in your session.
  • At the start of the session, briefly introduce yourself and explain the timing system to the audience.
  • Start the session on time; announce each abstract and author(s), inquire whether the presentation is given by a student (graduate or undergraduate) who wants to compete for a student award.
  • Adhere to the time schedule listed in the program so that simultaneous sessions are as closely synchronized as possible. Speakers must be asked to stop when their allotted time is up in a courteous but firm manner.
  • If any problems arise during the session, immediately contact the local support team at the meeting.
