• Dr. Lena Nguyen Receives $1,950,000 from NIH

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) awarded Dr. Lena Nguyen $1,950,000 for her project on Translational Control in Focal Cortical Malformations and Epilepsy, which supports research into the molecular drivers of drug-resistant epilepsy and potential new treatment targets.  This project focuses on understanding how disruptions in MNK-eIF4E signaling, which is part of an important cellular translation pathway, contribute to the development of brain malformations and drug-resistant seizures in children.

While existing models have recognized mTOR signaling as a factor in Focal Cortical Dysplasia type II (FCDII), the position of MNK-eIF4E dysregulation remains poorly understood. Dr. Nguyen’s research intends to close that knowledge gap using genetic tools, biochemical analysis, and advanced mouse models. This study will identify the specific mRNA subsets affected, evaluate lesion formation, and test whether targeting MNK activity can reduce seizure severity.

The main goal for Dr. Nguyen’s study is to discover new therapeutic targets to treat or stop intractable epilepsy. Long-term outcomes will include better treatment options, improved understanding of seizure disorders, and larger contributions to the field of Neuroscience.
