The US Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) awarded Dr. Majid Minary $479,779 for his research project: Self-Sensing and Self-Healing Metal Matrix Composites. Dr. Minary’s research will focus on demonstrating mechanisms for low-temperature, low-cost, and low-energy self-healing metal-matrix composites (MMCs). Dr. Minary hopes the desired MMC will be able to detect crack formation in the composite by sensing changes in the electrical resistance of the interconnected metal matrix, then heal the crack through the electrodeposition process.
