Information

Shipments from UTD that contain hazardous materials or dangerous goods must be packaged and shipped in compliance with regulations of the Department of Transportation (DOT) and the International Air Transportation Association (IATA). The regulations governing the shipment of hazardous materials are complex and additional training is required for UTD personnel who will ship these types of items.  UTD Safety Team personnel will facilitate delivery of this training to researchers, and will assist in documenting training completion via eShipGlobal.  This ensures that outgoing materials are properly packaged, labeled, and the appropriate shipping documentation is prepared and maintained.

The automated eShipGlobal system assists users in classifying their shipments into the appropriate categories, and will verify that users have appropriate training to proceed through each step of the process.

Items commonly shipped that are likely to be classified as DOT Hazardous Material packages include bulk materials, samples, or equipment that contains:

  • Hazardous chemicals
  • Biological materials
  • Radioactive materials
  • Lithium Batteries
  • Dry ice

Are you shipping domestic or international?

What you need to ship: Using the eShipGlobal system, provide a detailed description of the materials you are sending. Your level of training will be verified through each step of the process, according to the material classifications associated with items you plan to ship.  If your shipment contains hazardous or dangerous goods, the UTD Safety Team will be alerted to your shipping request, and will review the eShipGlobal submission for approval and provide guidance for packaging, labeling, and shipping as needed.  Please note any related UTD Project or Contract IDs in the ‘Shipment Reference’ field.

The Export Compliance Officer will assist the UTD Safety Team by reviewing any international shipments of biological or chemical materials for export compliance. Please be aware the need for an export license may significantly delay the shipment of related items.
