Investigator Onboarding and Offboarding

Investigators joining UTD

It is recommended that investigators who are new to UTD and conducting human subjects research review the Investigator Onboarding Guidance and reach out to the OHSP for a New Investigator Meeting. The overall goal of this meeting is to:

  • Obtain information about ongoing and/or planned human subjects research projects.
  • Provide guidance on submitting future projects to the UTD IRB.
  • Provide an opportunity to discuss any questions about UTD OHSP Policies or Procedures.

Additionally, the OHSP Investigator Manual is a comprehensive guide for investigators on policies and procedures for conducting human subjects research at UTD.

Investigators leaving UTD

Investigators, specifically those who are serving as Principal Investigator, co-Principal Investigator, or Faculty Sponsor on a study, who leave UTD, must ensure that all applicable processes are complete prior to their departure. It is recommended that the investigator contact the OHSP at least 30 days before their last day to ensure there is sufficient time to complete the necessary actions.

For active IRB submissions, investigators can choose to transfer study responsibility to another UTD investigator, close the study at UTD, or transfer IRB oversight to their new institution, if applicable. Please review the Investigators Leaving UTD Checklist and Investigators Leaving UTD Decision Chart for guidance on determining the appropriate next steps for each study. If transferring a study to a new UTD PI, the PI Eligibility Chart should be reviewed to ensure appropriate personnel will be selected as the new PI.

The OHSP will contact the investigator with the studies that will need to be transferred and / or closed at UTD. There is a 30-day grace period from initial notification. Should the studies not be closed or transferred by the 30-day grace period, OHSP will administratively close these studies.
